Kitchen lighting is often overlooked when planning and budgeting for a renovation. Many lighting solutions are available from window and skylight natural lighting options to traditional and halogen electrical appliances.

Natural Sources of Ceiling Light

If you are doing some major remodeling, seriously consider adding additional natural light sources. If your kitchen faces east, adding windows will give great morning light. For those facing west, enlarging or adding windows gives the most light in the later afternoon. A great way to take advantage of light throughout the day is with skylights.

Many varieties of skylights are now available including a small round variety that appears more like a light in the ceiling than a skylight. This type is usually relatively easy to install without making major changes to your roof and ceiling. They are generally less expensive than larger varieties, however don't give off as much light.

Natural light can do wonders for the look and feel of a kitchen area. Food preparation is easier when the counter space is well lit. During the winter months the extra light can be a boost to the spirit and counter the winter blues.

Man Made Lighting

Task Directed Lighting

Some areas need more light than others. Counter space is one such example. When preparing food the more light the better. A directed light overhead prevents shadows from falling on the area.

Ambient Sources

Ambient light is a general souce which provides light throughout a room, usually from a central area.

Combinations of directed light and ambient light makes for a well lit kitchen all around with extra light where you need it.

Decorative Fixtures

When considering your lighting options, take into consideration whether you want the fixture itself to add to the décor. A central light can be a focal point in the room. Choosing something dramatic can be a beautiful statement. Generally larger kitchens benefit from a large or bold light fixture.

Consider that even track lighting will be obvious and should be chosen carefully to go with the overall décor of the room. You will be much happier with a fixture that blends well and compliments the area than a plainer version that you don't particularly care for. Nowadays there are many inexpensive but pleasing designs to choose from.

Time Well Spent

Spend enough time on lighting to ensure that your kitchen is an enjoyable place; one where you can easily see the wonderful meals you will prepare everyday.
