There seems to be a pull these days between people wanting to buy energy efficient, but wanting the latest, greatest features at the same time.
Many appliances have become enormously more efficient than those of the past. Even with many special features, the energy used to run a fridge now as opposed to the 1960’s is much less. But as the world becomes more aware of environmental concerns, reducing pollution by conserving energy is becoming a hot issue.
There are many products today which run on quite small amounts of energy. But why have these products not overtaken the energy gluttons in the marketplace? There are several potential reasons.
Fridge Price
The initial cost of energy saving appliances is generally greater than their counterparts. Despite the fact there will be a substantial energy cost savings for years down the road, the initial price tag might scare people away. Why pay $500 more when you can buy a great looking and durable fridge for less? Money at hand, it seems is better than savings down the road. Often when the math is done, money will be saved in the long run from energy bills.
Features
Often the features of energy efficient fridges are limited. Energy is saved by omitting features such as ice makers and other frills. But we enjoy the use of new technologies which give us conveniences. So the choice often comes between the two. If energy efficient refrigerators had desirable features while at the same time was similar in price as their non efficient counterparts, the choice would be clear. Until that time, less efficient appliances may reign supreme.
