Specialty Lighting for the Kitchen

Once you’ve perfected the task lighting and general lighting in your kitchen, you may want to advance to specialty lighting. Above and beyond the base level of lighting required to properly work in a kitchen, lights can be installed in many places for a luxurious kitchen experience.

Inside Cabinet Lighting

In the same way that the fridge light comes on when you open the door, you can now buy kitchen cabinet lights which turn on when you open the cabinet door. When you close the door, the light goes off to save electricity. Although not necessary, cabinet lighting is beneficial, especially in the evening when the general lighting of the room is relatively dim. Imagine yourself going to get a drink in the evening. You don’t have to turn on the main kitchen lights; simply open the cabinet door to illuminate the area.

In-cabinet lights work especially well with glass shelving. Placing a light at the inside top of the cabinet will light all the shelves down to the bottom. Glass shelves look wonderful but do require a bit more cleaning than solid shelving to maintain its luster.

Kick Space Lighting (aka Toe Kick Lighting)

Another special lighting option for your kitchen is kick space lights. The kick space is the area between the lower cabinets and the floor. LED lights can be placed in this area because they are small enough to fit in the restricted space. Toe kick lighting is a wonderful way to add some light to the floor area to keep the kitchen subtly lit in the evenings.

Above Cabinet Lights

You may already have under the cabinet lights, but what about above the cabinet? If you have a space between your upper cabinets and the ceiling, you can add lights which illuminate the wall and ceiling above the cabinets. Long lights such as fluorescents work best because they light up the whole length of the cabinet. Above cabinet lights add to the brightness of the room.

Although none of the above lighting options is necessary, both add to your kitchen in ways that only light can. Light can really make wonderful touches to the atmosphere of the room.
