Kitchen remodeling is an expensive but rewarding endeavor. You may be at a point when you are looking at your kitchen wondering if is it time to tear everything out and start over with a new layout. How do you know when the time is right?

By remodelling, we mean a whole redesign from scratch. Basically tearing out all of your existing kitchen; cabinets, flooring, etc. and designing a new layout for the floorplan.

There are a few factors to consider when trying to make the decision. Here are a few of them:

personal taste
wear and tear
bad use of space
set up not ideal for working in the kitchen area
budget

Personal Taste

You kitchen may be in ok shape, but if styles have changed and you just can’t live with it then a remodel might be in order.

Carefully consider whether you can make a few changes rather than redesign. Sometimes changing a few key features can make a huge overall difference to the room. For example, refacing your cabinets and painting may give a whole new feeling to the kitchen without the need to do a tear out and start over.

Wear and Tear

If in general, your whole kitchen has deteriorated so that most of the elements could use replacing, then a remodel may be a wise decision. Since you need to replace most items already, it will cost you some serious money regardless. Taking advantage of the situation and deciding to remodel can help make the best use of the money. You can change the layout of your kitchen to make better use of space and ergonomics. You may spend more money than simply replacing the items separately, but the benefits of tear out and redesign may be more than worth it.

In some instances, wear and tear of certain kitchen areas can be treated as individual problems instead of a whole kitchen issue. For example, if your flooring needs to be replaced but the rest of your kitchen is still in good repair and works for you, then replacing the floor is probably the only change you need.

Kitchen Setup Not Ideal for Working

If you are constantly cursing the layout of your kitchen then chances are you should consider a redesign. Some kitchens were simply not designed well for people to work in. Older kitchens may be guilty of this fact. Newer houses often take into account new design concepts and will be a pleasure to work in for years.

Bad Use of Space

Some kitchen spaces don’t have nearly enough storage space. Others have space but it is allocated so badly as to be very inefficient. You may find yourself constantly thinking “Why didn’t they put a cupboard here?” or “Why on earth did they put shelves here instead of a drawer?” If you ask yourself what they could have been thinking when they put this kitchen in, then chances are a major kitchen remodel is in order.

Starting from scratch in a kitchen which you’ve been using for months or years is ideal because chances are you know where the problem areas are and you will be able to design for the space.

Remodel Budget

Budget is always a factor to consider. You may simply not have the funds to do a complete redesign. In this case, there are many ways to improve your kitchen on a limited budget. Or alternatively you may decide that if you live with your kitchen for another year or two, it is worth it to save up for the redesign your kitchen needs.
