Clothing is not the only thing needing accessories! Your kitchen may need a pick me up and can definitely benefit from adding some accessories throughout the room.

You might throw your hands up in the air and proclaim how useless you are at decorating. Don’t despair! With a few pointers you should be decorating in no time.

Finding out What Décor You Like

Before running out to the store, you need to make some decisions about what you’d like your kitchen to look like. Themes are a good place to start. Consider several themes to see if there is one that stands out from the rest. Do you like country style kitchen themes? Antique themes? Contemporary themes? Look online and at some magazines to get a feel for different themes possible. The color scheme you should go with will be dictated by the colors already present in your kitchen.

Look at What you Have

Consider the existing accessories in the room. Do you want to keep these items? Are they workable using the theme you’ve chosen? Pick and choose through them and only keep the ones that you truly love or that go with the theme.

Rearranging the items you have can make a big difference to the look of the room. Grouping items in odd numbers is recommended. Using varying heights and differing textures is pleasing to the eye.

Don’t be shy about using fruit as part of the decor. Fresh fruit is vibrant and will add splashes of color while you store your fruit.

Artwork and Pictures in the Kitchen

Don’t shy away from artwork in the kitchen. Just like all your other rooms, the walls need adornment. Knowing how to hang art is helpful in creating a balanced wall.

Hang the pictures so the middle of the art is at the eye level of most of the people in the house. Eye level varies from person to person so use a middle ground. If you have a table in the area, a general rule is not to place a picture more than 7-10 inches above the table. Placing the piece higher can appear odd and make the table look out of place.

Unclutter your Shelves

Most people tend to overstuff their open cupboard shelving. Because they are unfamiliar with accessorizing, they want to use the space to hold as much as possible. You’d be surprised how unsettling and distracting a cluttered kitchen shelf can be. Grouping items in odd numbers is recommended. Once you streamline and minimize the items to a reasonable amount placed tastefully, you’ll breathe a sigh of relief. Ever wonder why hotel rooms often seem so calm and serene compared to home? They are uncluttered and use the space well.

Plants are a great accessory for the kitchen area. The greenery adds warmth and a natural feeling to the room. If you don’t have room on shelves or on top of cabinets, consider adding a plant by hanging one from the ceiling.

Learning about decorating a kitchen is like learning anything. You’ve got to get your feet wet and try. With each decorating step you make, you will learn more towards what works well together.
