Choosing Kitchen Cabinets

When it is time to replace the cabinets in your kitchen, you have many options to choose from in terms of material and look. With the cost of kitchen cabinets these days you will want to make sure to do your homework. Most home improvement stores deal in cabinets for the kitchen and you can get an idea from them about some of the products available.

Go to Cabinet Stores Prepared

Whether you are going to home improvement stores or specialty cabinet stores, go prepared. Bring measurements for all aspects of the cabinetry you will need along with measurements of your entire kitchen. Measure your existing cabinets thoroughly, even if you are going to change the placement in your remodel. Don’t forget to measure the height, depth and width of appliances as well as windows and islands.

Some stores have computer programs where you can see what your new kitchen will look like with your cabinets of choice. This is a real advantage because it is very hard to visualize without seeing a representation. You may not realize little things you don’t like about the cabinets until you see a mock up.

If you decide to go with a larger home improvement store, they are usually happy to send a professional out to your kitchen to check that the measurements are accurate. They may be able to make other suggestions while there also.

Realize your Options

Cabinets come in three main forms for purchase: stock cabinets, semi-custom cabinets, and custom cabinetry. These options are generally tiered differently for price. The stock versions are usually the cheapest followed by the semi-custom and the custom is the most expensive.

With stock kitchen cabinets you have less choice in the way of colors, styles and shapes. You can save money with these types of cabinets. If you can find what you are looking for in stock styles then you are in luck.

In semi-stock cabinetry are usually a standard size, but there are more designs and options. They are usually higher in quality than stock and you can choose from different options in cabinet storage. Some of the features you may be able to include are spice racks, lazy susans, drawer dividers and wine racks.

Custom are the most expensive but also the most specifically made for your kitchen. With custom you can pretty much do anything available for the right price.

If you want to really go all out, consider adding some special touches. A copper or granite sink, for instance, will really add a unique touch to your kitchen. Or you may want to add a cement counter top. Both of these features can be added to custom cabinets. Be sure to know what you are adding before you order your cabinets. Make sure the cabinet frames are sturdy enough to hold thick stone if you decide to go with concrete or granite counters.
