High end homes almost always seem to have granite counter tops in the kitchen area. Is this merely a trend or is there a reason for the large use of granite?
Beauty of Granite Combined with Functionality
The appeal of granite is two fold. First is the appeal of appearance. Granite is a highly attractive stone which comes in a large range of colors. The surface can range from predominantly solid colors to very mottled colors together. Some of the colors include shades of greens, browns, reds, blues, beige, white and black.
The shine of the surface is another appeal. In contrast to melamine countertops which are generally dull or matte, granite is polished to a shine. This shine compliments many of today’s cabinet finish choices such as pine, maple, oak etc. as well as traditional white.
Adding to granite’s appeal is the association with prestige. Because the counters are relatively expensive they are a symbol of doing well.
In addition to the appearance, granite counters are durable. Granite is a very hard material and is very resistant to scratches and cracking. Granite can take the heat literally – it can withstand the heat normally associated with kitchen uses. Granite can be also be sealed which can help reduce staining.
The combination of classic looks with such a durable material makes granite a great choice for your home. They do generally cost more than other types of countertop materials. Cost is something you will have to factor in to the equation. But because countertops made with granite add beauty plus longevity, the value of your home will generally increase once you’ve installed them.
