When you refinish kitchen appliance items you can prolong their life by improving their appearance. Some appliances are easier to refinish than others. You can breathe new life into stainless steel appliances simply by properly cleaning them.
It might seem as though the stainless is permanently stained (as ironic as that sounds) but until you try a cleaner meant for stainless don’t jump to conclusions. It can make a huge difference. The cleaners have gentle abrasives in them that are meant to gently clean without scratching. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to see the best results.
The cleaner we use is meant for unlaquered surfaces. After applying you need to rinse thoroughly to remove residue. Usually you wet the surface before applying the cleaner. If stubborn stains are still there, you can make a light paste with the cleaner and a bit of water and then apply and rub.
The great thing about most of these types of cleaners is that they are biodegradable and nontoxic. You don’t have to worry about harsh chemicals. If you haven’t cleaned the surface in a while, you might want to do a cleaning once a week for 3-4 weeks to remove most of the grime without overdoing it in one sitting.
For other types of kitchen appliances, sometimes you can refinish the surface by replacing the faceplates. If your appliance has a face that is removable, you might be able to order a new one from the manufacturer. Fridges may be given a new look by replacing the doors. It may cost a bit but can be well worth it if your fridge still has a lot of life left in it.
Second hand fridges, ranges and dishwashers can be a good resource for replacement parts. Your local appliance repair shop often has many parts for a variety of brand names.
