The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the house. It is also one of the most renovated rooms. The kitchen is much more than a room to merely cook. It is a social spot where much time is spent by both family and friends. Many contractors agree that kitchen renovations can be very difficult by very rewarding at the same time (for both the contractor and the owner of the house.)
There are three important remodelling questions to ask yourself before you proceed:
1. Do you have a reliable contractor?
Many people assume all contractors are equal. Make sure the person you hire has good references. Even better would be to hire someone who did work for someone you know well. The extra effort in finding someone reliable is definitely worth its weight in gold. Your whole project’s success depends on this one person. Friends told us of a contractor who took the money and ran without paying his laypeople. They ended up having the laypeople demanding money from them even though they already paid the contractor for the work done.
2. Are you demanding something too complex for your budget? Be realistic about what can be done for the money you would like to spend. You will either have to cut corners to keep on budget or you will end up spending much more than you originally wanted. What you want and what you can afford have to meet in the middle ground.
3. Do you know what is involved in the remodelling process? The more informed you are about the specifics of the renovations, the smoother everything will go: the easier it will be to approximate costs; keep on top of whether the laypeople are doing the job correctly; whether it is possible to do what you want for your budget; if you hit snags you will be more able to deal with them. Learning about the renovation processes doesn’t mean you need to be able to do the work or be an expert. A basic knowledge of what is involved will put you miles ahead in your project. Learn about the different products available, read about some installation steps; you’ll find that it is interesting and even fun because this is your kitchen and you will be living with it for years to come.
