Remodeling of the kitchen is done by thousands and thousands of North Americans each year. Whether the extent of the remodeling is a simple fixture or appliance replacement and paint, or an entire tear-out and redesign, expenses can run high. Many homeowners decide to do some or all of the work themselves to help reduce the costs. Do-it-yourself books are available but are they worth it?
Decide what you need
Because there are so many types of books to choose from, decide what your kitchen repair/remodel needs are before you go any further. If you are tackling one particular type of project, such as a kitchen island, then you may benefit from finding a book specifically on islands rather than a comprehensive kitchen renovation guide.
If you are starting with one project but plan to complete many other kitchen projects then a detained kitchen remodelling book is more in order.
Your Experience Level
The next consideration is the level of your knowledge and experience. If you are familiar with some home repair or renovation techniques then you will require a much different type of book than someone who needs to learn even the most basic steps.
A Kitchen Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
With do-it-yourself books, a picture truly is worth a thousand words or more. How many times have you tried to follow written instructions only to become confused as to the context of what they are talking about. Even well written books with detailed instructions often fail to put across the proper information without pictures. There are just too many factors to adequately explain many of the processes involved with renovations. Before buying any books, make sure that the instructions come with some illustrated examples which are adequately explained in a manner that you can easily understand.
Cost Vs. Value
Some books can cost a small fortune; unless these books contain exactly what you need then keep looking around. Stores in your neighborhood may have a limited amount of resources. Many books and guides are available online. Search around to find many sources. Some used books may be an invaluable resource for a very affordable price.
For the most part, books – even expensive books – can save a lot of trouble and time figuring things out on your own. If a book contains detailed enough information for your specific needs with easy to follow instructions and pictures, then compared to the cost of building materials and the time it takes to do remodeling, the price of a book is relatively low.
