Consider the numerous options in kitchen center island designs before buying one. Islands can range from a small free standing tabletop to permanent structures with plumbing and stovetops. With such a large selection, make sure to consider all your options carefully.

Free Standing Islands

For small spaces often a free standing island works well. Free standing types of islands can be cart style, table style, butcher block style or even cabinet style. Some varieties have wheels on the bottom to allow easy moving or adjusting. Other styles sit on the floor on legs while others sit flush on the floor.

If you require a freestanding center island, decide if movement is a requirement for your situation. Wheels are a great asset if you need to be able to push the island to the side now and then. Also consider whether you need storage space. If so then opt for a cabinet style. If the items you’d like to store are attractive in any way, consider a style with open shelves. For ordinary household items with no eye appeal, choose a style with cabinets with doors.

Wood is usually the most predominant material in free standing islands however you may find varieties in metal as well.

Permanent Center Islands

Permanent islands come in two types of center designs: stock and custom. If your kitchen area is very basic and common you may be able to find a stock center island design. Basic common stock designs are square, rectangular or semi-circular.

If your space is unusual or you require custom features – a custom island is more in order. The great advantage of custom styles is how you can make the best use of your kitchen space. The sky is the limit for the shape you can have made. You can also incorporate a seating area if desired. The kitchen is increasingly becoming a social center of the house. Stool seating around an island is a great way to make your kitchen a more social space.
