Granite is a natural stone. Granite is a very hard and durable material. There are some variations of colors and patterns in the stone itself. Color is limited to what nature made. In many cases the colors are desirable because it is natural stone and it imparts an element of nature into the kitchen.

Most granite needs to be sealed on a regular basis. Granite is tough but can chip and crack if hit too hard. The stone can also crack if too much heat is applied in an area for too long. Large differences in temperature can ‘shock’ the stone because of the expansion and contraction of the stone is at too quick a rate and can result in cracking. It can resist some heat but too large of an amount can cause damage.

Corian is a man made counter top. Maintenance and cleaning of Corian is very easy. Wash up is done most times simply with soap and water. The surface doesn’t have to be sealed. It is very durable and will resist scratches and heat to a certain degree. That doesn’t mean you can put burning matches on it without consequence. The surface can scorch leaving marks. And the manufacturer doesn’t recommend putting pots directly on to the surface.

The pattern in Corian goes through the whole counter. This is an advantage over surfaces like laminate because small scratches will be relatively unnoticeable. Scratches can actually be repaired by specialists. It can be a bit pricey but it is considerably less than tearing out and buying new counters. The amount of colors and patterns to choose from is one of the biggest advantages of Corian over granite. With over 100 types to choose from you can customize your kitchen for color.

Both Corian and granite counters can be pricey, but generally granite is more expensive. When it comes down to it, I think the answer ultimately depends on how much you like granite countertops. There is some extra cost and extra work in the way of maintenance with granite. But natural stones really are unique and different in look and feel compared to the many man-made counter materials available.

Status and Keeping Up with the Jones’

Really evaluate how much you truly want granite vs how much you want to keep up with the trends of people around you. It is very trendy to have granite in the kitchen. In higher end homes it seems to be a status symbol. Is it something you love and you are willing to put in the extra maintenance and cost? If so, then I’d say definitely go with the granite. You really will appreciate the beauty of it.

If you aren’t in love with granite, I’d say take a closer look at Corian and all the colors and varieties available. With all of its advantages you may find it a better solution for your situation after all.
