Copper sinks are not just functional hardware in the kitchen; they really are works of art. If you are unfamiliar with copper kitchen sinks then you are in for a treat.

The common stainless steel sinks you find in most local home improvement stores are functional and look fine in the kitchen. But once you’ve seen the variety and beauty of copper sinks for the kitchen you may never look at a stainless sink the same again!

The most striking difference of sinks made of copper is the variety in which you they can be found. Because many copper sinks are handmade, original shapes and sizes are available. Many sinks have a decorative front panel which displays the beauty of purposefully aged copper.

Care of Copper Kitchen Sinks

There are two types of copper sink finishes – shiny and aged (also known as patina). Care for each type is very different.

Aged Copper Care

Caring for a copper sink which is allowed to age naturally is very easy. Washing with soap and water is all the sink requires.

Leaving the natural copper finish without using any varnishes or waxes allows the sinks natural antibacterial properties to remain intact. Covering the surface of the sink with protective substances will inhibit the natural germ resistant properties of the metal.

Sometimes if an acidic food or liquid is left on the natural finish for an extended period of time, the patina will come off and leave a shiny spot. Don’t despair! It won’t take long for the natural aging to change it back to a darker patina color. Try to avoid prolonged contact with acidic substances to avoid color changes.

Shiny Copper Sink Care

Care of a shiny copper sink requires more maintenance. A gentle polish must be used regularly to buff away the natural aging of the copper. Although it is more work to maintain a shiny copper sink, many people enjoy the color and shine enough to warrant the extra effort.

Some of the shapes available are:
free standing bowl – The trend of a free standing bowl on top of a counter definitely extends to copper. Many varieties are double walled with a thick, chunky and sturdy look.

trough shaped – Elongated sinks of copper are unique additions to kitchens and bathrooms.

rounded – bathrooms will benefit from rounded sinks. These sunken types of sinks are unique enough to make a statement and the roundness makes them stunning.

traditional rectangular – traditional style rectangular copper sinks are a good addition when you would like something to fit into an already existing counter hole.

Prices can be steep, but if you are looking for something unique then definitely look into copper as an option.
