Kitchen Island Design Idea

From designing our own kitchen island, we have a valuable designing tip for you.

Make Sure it Works

It is quite hard for people to judge how much room they need inbetween their kitchen cupboards (cabinets), fridge, stove etc. and the island. The worst thing you can do is put the island too close to something and regret it later. At the same time, you don’t want to leave too much room as wasted space in between the two. Here is a suggestion that worked well for us.

Once you think you have an island design figured out, cut out a piece of cardboard the same size as you want the island. The best is if you can actually build up cardboard sides to approximate the island’s actual size and structure. If you can’t make sides of cardboard, at least place a piece of cardboard on the floor that is the same size as your desired island.

Now here’s the clincher - keep the cardboard mock-up in that spot for at least a week. Act as though it was a real island and move around it accordingly. You will soon get an idea of where it may be too close to appliances or where there could be a bit more space.

A week is really necessary for you to get used to the idea of having an island in your kitchen and is also long enough for you to get really annoyed at the places where it just doesn’t work. Believe me; going through this preliminary step is worth it to find out the problems before you make your island a permanent fixture.

You’ll be surprised at what you didn’t think of before going through the test phase. And you’ll be surprised at how different your kitchen will feel with the space filled up. Once you go through the week you’ll be able to tweak the island to get things just the way that feels right for you.
