When most people picture linoleum, they probably have an image of their childhood kitchen floors. The checkerboard squares in black and white are a common image. Many people believe that most floors of today are still made of linoleum. The transition from lino to vinyl happened so smoothly and they look so similar that many people think they are one in the same.

Linoleum vs Vinyl
There are actually a large number of differences between the two; hardness, durability, biodegradability, selection, price, and heat resistance are a few.

Price
Price is one of the major reasons vinyl gained popularity so quickly. Vinyl can be considerably cheaper than linoleum. However, there are many different grades and qualities of vinyl ranging from very inexpensive to fairly pricey. Many factors affect the price including the quality and durability of the top protective coating and the look.

Selection

Another appeal of vinyl floors is the selection. Vinyl probably has the largest selection of colors, patterns and textures of any flooring material. When trying to find something to match your décor, vinyl has the distinct advantage of having a huge choice.

Hardness

Linoleum is considerably harder than vinyl, and it continues to harden (as it cures) over time. A harder material means less scratches and scuffs. The softness of vinyl lends itself to more damageability than lino.

Durability

Linoleum is more durable than vinyl. Some lino can stand up to 40 years of use. It is resistant to denting. Within linoleum products, quality can vary. Decide what kind of time frame you would like the flooring to last and work from there when choosing linoleum.

Heat Resistance

Linoleum doesn’t burn easily and is more resistant to melting and burning. It is naturally fire retardant and won’t give off fumes. Linoleum is made from very natural ingredients and most varieties are fully biodegradable and don’t give off harmful vapors. If you consider environmental factors, linoleum has several advantages over vinyl.

All in all, price probably has the biggest influence over most people’s choice of vinyl vs lino.
